On Thursday, House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik added her endorsement to a growing list of supporters of congressional hopeful George Logan, who is running to unseat Rep. Jahana Hayes (D) in Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District.
“As a community leader and former State Senator, George has always been a strong supporter of our veterans, law enforcement, students, and small businesses,” the New York congresswoman said in an exclusive statement to Just the News. “I look forward to working with George in Congress to help delivermuch needed change for Connecticut and our country.”
Earlier this year, the National Republican Campaign Committee designated Logan, a former state senator, a candidate who is “On the Radar.” The designation is an indication of the NRCC’s level of interest in challenging Hayes, a two-term incumbent.
The NRCC has already run a handful of digital ads criticizing Hayes. With Republicans expected to win back control of one or both chambers of Congress, party organizations and leadership have begun to focus on seats previously viewed as unwinnable.
In addition to NRCC efforts, the Congressional Leadership Fund has committed $1.75 million to TV ads for this race, which is taking place in one of the cheapest media markets in the country.
Hayes has been designated by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee as an at-risk incumbent and is a part of the DCCC’s “Frontline” program, which identifies its incumbents needing the most support.
Stefanik, who has led the fight for more Republican women in the House through her efforts with E-PAC, is fighting to flip the House in November by concentrating her endorsements on candidates in Democrat-held districts. Thus far, she has endorsed more than 20 candidates running for seats won by Democrats last cycle. She is the first member of House leadership to endorse Logan.
“I’m proud and honored to accept the endorsement of our campaign for Congress from Congresswoman Elise Stefanik,” Logan said in a statement. “Congresswoman Stefanik is a fierce advocate for our veterans, students, and small businesses. I look forward to working with Congresswoman Stefanik in Washington to help get America back on track.”
If elected, Logan would become the first Hispanic-African American Republican in Congress.
