WASHINGTON, D.C. | U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik has signed a Congressional amicus brief, led by U.S. Rep. Claudia Tenney (NY-22), to the United States Supreme Court challenging New York’s conceal carry restrictions on law-abiding gun owners.
The case, New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Corlett, challenges the state’s denial of concealed-carry licenses for self-defense and asks the Supreme Court to declare whether there is a constitutional right to carry a weapon outside the home.
“Law-abiding gun owners in New York State continue to have their Second Amendment rights threatened by Governor Cuomo’s unconstitutional policies,” Stefanik said in a July 20 statement.
Stefanik said the case comes at a “crucial time” amid federal pushes for added gun-control measures and “during a surge in violent crimes across the country.”
“I am proud to join my colleagues in sending this brief to the Supreme Court as they consider this important case and urge the court to uphold our constitutional right to bear arms.”
The New York State Rifle and Pistol Association thanked both federal representatives for their support and applauded Stefanik’s “diligent work in support of our Second Amendment rights.”
NYSRPA Executive Director Tom King said “With violent crime skyrocketing in New York, the sacred right to protect yourself and your family has never been more important.”
Stefanik has been a strong supporter of Second Amendment protections, including by recently introducing the Second Amendment Guarantee Act that looks to override New York’s SAFE Act.
